People are driven by targets, incentives and penalties. Often times we use incentives to drive towards the targets.

KPIs are a very powerful way of driving an organisation towards its goals. Other the other hand, if done wrongly, KPIs can be value destroying.

KPIs needs to be set with a holistic view of the overall business direction, targets and resources. This has to happen at all employee levels.

The holistic view of these KPI's should be assessed in all directions:

My planning and budgeting philosophies:

  • start with high level plans - determine where you want to go and how much you can afford to spend to get there. this process sets the direction and the resource constraints (money, people and time).
  • give a long term direction on how these targets and resource constraints are expected to move. get senior management and direct downline buy-in to this direction.

I thought of putting some of my thoughts on a range of management matters here. I intend that these entries reflect my ideas, rationale and philosophy on various management matters.

As a starting point, these are the thoughts and areas that i feel needs developing:

  • matrix organisations
  • operational excellence
  • value based management
  • behavioural competencies
  • the business / line accountabilities
  • philosophies on outsourcing
  • asset management
  • capital management
