Why the website(s) building?

A colleague of mine recently asked me the question why I go about building the various websites that I do. What I expect, and have any of my expectations materialised?

A good question.

My view is simple: I have a number of interests, objectives and thoughts on various subjects. Sadly, I have very little time to further expand on those interests, objectives and thoughts (as an individual). However, I fully believe that as a community each individuals has the ability to "help each other" on these matters. The gain I seek for many of these are not monetary but of information, personal learning and development.

One key initiative is f.i.r.m. - this is intended to provide me and anybody connected to this community with a rich web of knowledge. Unfortunately, the subject matter is serious, and the target market are mainly finance people (who are mostly either too busy to share experiences, or cannot see the *tangible* benefits -eg. r.o.i.- of such sharing).

As for the Sri Damansara community site... I have not done this properly yet. The intent is to synergise the locational community towards a common goal. Initially this relates to security. Unfortunately, I myself have not been active in the local community activities hence not being able to promote this well. Still, the idea is the same.

If these communities grow, then there will be opportunities for targetted activities. I believe these will be very effective given the specific nature of each community.

I do this precisely because I need to balance my life between my family and professional roles with my own recreational and personal development. As I mentioned before, the net is the only way I can expand my personal facets by leveraging special interest virtual communities. And it fits nicely for an employee of an internet company to start creating reasons for people to go online.

As a matter of interest, this site (thefazz.com) is targetted to the car and technology loving professional (people whom I call CATLOPs).
