Super strings: The theory of the universe

I recently caught a series on TV on Super string theory - or the theory of everything in the universe. The series is called The Elegant Universe. It is shown by NOVA, an online science site with several video programmes.
What makes me interested in this series is the pursuit of a single theory that unites and explains the physics of gravity, electro-magnetism and quantum mechanics. The current conundrum is that these theories do not seem compatible. But how can that be so? Surely the laws of physics should apply to all in the universe? The video series explains it quite nicely as the laws of physics start to break down when you go down to the sub-atomic levels.
So the super string theory is being proposed as the one that could tie all these theories together. However, scientists are still not quite there yet.
The promise of this theory is to understand how matters can move through time and space and alternate universes. This is almost science fiction - as perhaps one day we can teleport across time, space and alternate universes.
